Advanced First Aid Course Information
The following units will be included in your certificate:
- HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid
- HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
- HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support

In this course, learners will practise and develop skills in:
- Recognising and assessing an emergency situation
- Checking for danger and keeping yourself, bystanders, and the casualty safe
- Following the DRSABCD action plan
- Assessing an unconscious casualty
- Calling emergency services and seeking help
- Performing effective CPR
- Using an Automated External Defibrillator, also known as an AED
- Placing a breathing unconscious casualty in the recovery position
- Managing choking and breathing difficulties
- Responding to asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies
- Managing severe bleeding and shock
- Applying bandaging, wound care, bleeding control, and injury management techniques
- Responding to burns, fractures, sprains, and soft tissue injuries
- Managing head, neck, spinal, chest, abdominal, and crush injuries
- Responding to seizures, fainting, diabetes-related emergencies, stroke, chest pain, and other sudden illness situations
- Coordinating a first aid response in more complex emergency situations

Complete the theory component online before attending your practical face-to-face session.
Learners must complete the required online pre-learning before attending the face-to-face practical assessment session.
Face-to-Face Practical Assessment
Attend our Tarneit training location to practise CPR, AED use, DRSABCD, recovery position, bandaging, wound care, bleeding control, shock management, casualty assessment, injury management, coordination of a first aid response, and practical advanced first aid skills with your trainer.
Online Pre-Course Duration
The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 6 hours to complete. Learners with prior first aid experience may complete the online component in less time, while learners new to advanced first aid may need more time to complete all learning content and theory questions.

Course Requirements
An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR*
- To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
- Learning: Take in detailed information, stay calm, and make decisions to manage a serious situation until help arrives.
- Reading: Read and understand detailed first aid guides, labels, or emergency instructions in a stressful situation.
- Writing: Clearly write down what happened during an emergency, including steps taken and changes I noticed.
- Oral communication: Explain what’s happening and pass on important information to emergency services or others helping out.
- Numeracy: Use numbers to monitor time, check vital signs like breathing or pulse, and track how someone is responding.
- Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources
*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.
Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 6 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.
Before attending your HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid practical session, please ensure you:
- Complete any required online pre-learning before your face-to-face practical session
• Bring valid photo identification
• Wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical first aid activities, including kneeling and performing CPR on the floor
• Arrive on time for your scheduled session
• Inform us before the course if you have any physical limitations, medical concerns, or learning support needs
• Be prepared to participate in practical advanced first aid scenarios, CPR practice, AED use, recovery position, bleeding control, bandaging, fracture management, spinal injury management, advanced casualty management, scenario-based emergency response, and other required assessment activities
Because this course includes CPR assessment, learners must be prepared to kneel on the floor and perform CPR on a manikin as part of the practical assessment requirements.
Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.

To successfully complete HLTAID014 - Provide Advanced First Aid, learners must complete the required theory and practical assessment tasks.
Theory assessment:
- Online knowledge questions
- A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
Practical assessment includes:
- Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
- Manage a casualty with asthma
- Manage a choking casualty
- Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding requiring minor wound cleaning
- Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
- Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
- Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
- Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
- Simulated First Aid Scenario - Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed and shock
- Coordinate a multiple casualty incident
Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard, which includes:
- Completing a first aid incident report form based on the adult CPR simulated first aid scenario
- Completing a first aid incident report form based on the life-threatening bleed and shock first aid scenario
