HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
In this course, learners will practise and develop skills in:
- Recognising and assessing an emergency situation
- Checking for danger and keeping yourself, bystanders, and the casualty safe
- Assessing if a person is unconscious and not breathing normally
- Calling emergency services
- Following the DRSABCD action plan
- Performing effective chest compressions
- Providing rescue breaths where required
- Using an AED safely
- Placing a breathing unconscious casualty in the recovery position
- Minimising interruptions to CPR
- Understanding infection control and personal protective equipment
- Reporting incident details after an emergency
ARC guidance describes CPR as chest compressions combined with rescue breathing, used to temporarily maintain circulation and help preserve brain function until specialised treatment is available

Online pre-course duration: The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Course Requirements
An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR*
- To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
- Learning: Follow instructions, ask for help, and learn from feedback.
- Reading: I can read short texts like signs and step-by-step instructions.
- Writing: Write short notes or fill out a simple form.
- Oral communication: Listen carefully and speak clearly in a classroom environment.
- Numeracy: Count and use simple numbers.
- Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources
*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.
Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Before attending your practical session, please ensure you:
- Complete any required online pre-learning
- Bring photo identification
- Wear comfortable clothing suitable for kneeling and performing CPR on the floor
- Arrive on time for your scheduled session
- Inform us before the course if you have any physical limitations or learning support needs
Because CPR assessment requires practical demonstration on the floor, learners should be prepared to kneel and perform CPR on a manikin.
Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.

A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
Practical assessment may include:
- Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Demonstration of AED use
- Emergency response scenarios
- Safe infection control and PPE practices
- Communication and reporting requirements
The official assessment requirements for HLTAID009 include demonstration of compression and ventilation skills on resuscitation manikins, with access to adult and infant manikins, AED training devices, and PPE.
