This practical course provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to safely assist clients with medication in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
It is designed for support workers who assist clients with their daily medication needs.

Course Duration
- Pre-course online learning (to be completed before attending):
The online pre-course learning is expected to take approximately 5-6 hours.
- Face-to-face practical session contact time of at least 2 Hours
Important Note:
- Due to the critical nature of medication training, you must complete the online theory before attending your practical assessment.
- If you are unable to complete the online learning, please provide at least 72 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule your course.
- Failure to provide sufficient notice may result in your course being cancelled.

HLTHPS006 - Assist Clients with Medication Course Information
Participants will learn how to:
- Safely assist clients with self-administered medications.
- Follow the rights of medication assistance.
- Read and interpret medication charts and prescriptions.
- Understand common medication types and their uses.
- Assist with various medication forms, including tablets, liquids, creams, eye drops and inhalers.
- Recognise medication errors and know how to respond appropriately.
- Identify common side effects, allergies and adverse reactions.
- Maintain infection prevention and hygiene standards.
- Complete medication documentation accurately.
- Report incidents and communicate effectively with supervisors and healthcare professionals.
- Follow legal, ethical and workplace requirements relating to medication assistance.

The course applies to individuals working in the health and community services sectors such as Aged Care Workers, Community Care Workers, Disability Support Workers, Personal Care Workers and Respite Care Workers who wish to develop the knowledge and skills in supporting people to self-administer medication and complete medication documentation, according to the relevant Federal and state/territory legislation, regulations, codes or practice and workplace policies and procedures.
Students will also develop an understanding of the various forms of medication, the different modes medication can be administered as well as the characteristics of several commonly used medications, including both prescribed and over the counter medication. In addition, students will assist with providing medication using at least five (5) different types of medications and at least three (3) different modes of administration as well as complete associated medication documentation.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) recommends Medication Management training is refreshed annually to stay current with policies, procedures and techniques.

Practical scenarios:
- Scenario 1 – Provide assistance with medication – Asthma
- Scenario 2 – Provide assistance with medication – Anaphylaxis
- Scenario 3 – Provide assistance with medication – PRN Liquid Paracetamol
- Scenario 4 – Provide assistance with medication – Eye Drops
- Scenario 5 – Provide assistance with medication – Tablets
Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:
- Incident Report Forms
- Medication Administration Forms
Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.

Numeracy | I can use basic maths to check times, doses, or the number of tablets that need to be given. |
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
- Visual acuity, with or without corrective aids, to accurately read medication care plans, medication labels, and measuring equipment, and to observe client condition.
- To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
- Learning: Can learn and remember steps for safely helping someone take their medicine and know when to ask for further advice.
- Reading: Can read and understand labels, instructions, or charts that show how and when medication should be taken.
- Writing: Can write simple notes or fill in records to keep track of medication that’s been given or when a patient refuses it.
- Oral communication: Can ask and answer questions clearly to make sure I understand how to help someone with their medication.
- Numeracy: Can use basic maths to check times, doses, or the number of tablets that need to be given.
- Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources
- The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 5-6 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
- An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
- Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR *
- To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
- Learning: Follow instructions, ask for help, and learn from feedback.
- Reading: Read short texts like signs and step-by-step instructions.
- Writing: Write short notes or fill out a simple form.
- Oral communication: Listen carefully and speak clearly in a classroom environment.
- Numeracy: Count and use simple numbers.
- Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources
*Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions.
Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.
Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 5.5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.
Before attending your HLTAID011 Provide First Aid practical session, please ensure you:
- Complete any required online pre-learning before your face-to-face session
• Bring valid photo identification
• Wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical first aid activities, including kneeling and performing CPR on the floor
• Arrive on time for your scheduled session
• Inform us before the course if you have any physical limitations, medical concerns, or learning support needs
• Be prepared to participate in practical first aid scenarios, CPR practice, bandaging, recovery position, and other required assessment activities
Because the course includes CPR assessment, learners must be prepared to kneel on the floor and perform CPR on a manikin as part of the practical assessment requirements.

To successfully complete HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, learners must complete the required theory and practical assessment tasks.
Theory assessment:
Online knowledge questions
A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
Practical assessment includes:
- Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
- Manage a casualty with asthma
- Manage a choking casualty
- Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and requiring minor wound cleaning
- Manage a casualty with shock
- Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
- Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
- Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
- Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
Documentation: The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard which include:
- Completing a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
