Which First Aid Course Do You Actually Need for a Childcare Job?

You land a role at a childcare centre, the director asks for your first aid certificate, and you book “a first aid course” online. Simple enough. Then you turn up on day one, hand it over, and find out it is the wrong one. It happens more often than you would think, because several first aid courses sound almost identical but are built for different workplaces. If you work with children, one specific unit is the one that counts, and booking the wrong one can cost you time, money and a start date. 

First aid, decoded: HLTAID012, HLTAID011 and HLTAID009 

Nationally recognised first aid training in Australia sits under a set of unit codes. Three come up most often, and the names give away who each is for: 

• HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): CPR only. Best as an annual refresher, and for roles where CPR competency is the specific requirement. 
• HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: the general workplace certificate. Covers CPR plus bleeding, burns, fractures, asthma and anaphylaxis for adult-focused settings. 
• HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting: the childcare unit. It includes everything in HLTAID011, then adds infant and child specific skills for early learning environments. 

There is also HLTAID010 Basic Emergency Life Support for anyone who needs more than CPR but not a full first aid certificate. In plain terms, HLTAID012 is HLTAID011 with the children’s content built in. That single difference is what trips people up. 

Why childcare and OSHC roles need HLTAID012 

Early childhood is a regulated sector. Under the National Quality Framework, overseen by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), education and care services must have staff trained in approved first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management. 

HLTAID012 is designed to meet exactly that. It covers: 

• Infant, child and adult CPR 
• Anaphylaxis and asthma emergencies 
• Choking, seizures, fever and other child-specific situations 

Because ACECQA recognises HLTAID012 as covering first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma together, you generally do not need to book those as separate courses. HLTAID011 on its own does not include the infant and child focus that centres require, which is the most common booking mistake of all. • The issue date, so the certificate is still current
